winshotx, developed by Munir Torres, is a free and open source screenshot and screen recording tool for Windows 10 and 11, positioned as a lightweight alternative to the built-in Snipping Tool. Distributed as a 2.51 MB installer, it fits the graphics and screen capture software category and serves use cases such as documentation, bug reporting, tutorials, and quick visual communication. The current version is 0.2.25, with 12 versions released to date. The tool captures a region over a frozen screenshot using a 6x pixel magnifier that displays the exact colour in hex and copies it with one key, snaps to system windows, and records the selected region to GIF or MP4 at 15, 30 or 60 fps through Windows Graphics Capture. Its editor trims recordings frame by frame with A and B marks, crops images, and annotates them with arrows, boxes, text, highlights, and a mosaic that conceals private details, exporting results to GIF, MP4, PNG or JPG, either to disk or to the clipboard. A replay ring feature continuously records and discards old footage, allowing the last 15, 30 or 60 seconds to be saved directly into the editor with a single key without interrupting the recording. The software downloads nothing at runtime: MP4 output is produced by Media Foundation in hardware, the GIF encoder is written in pure Rust, and text recognition relies on the OCR capabilities already included in Windows, eliminating bundled FFmpeg or separate OCR components. It installs for the current user only and therefore never requests administrator rights, operates from the system tray without a dedicated window, and maintains no account system, telemetry, or uploads. The interface is available in English and Spanish and follows the Windows language setting automatically.
